I have been cleaning my records and stylus before putting them on. I have noticed my stylus collecting a lot of dirt recently. The crackle has been pretty bad on every record. What do yall think? Also what are the best ways to clean styli and records?

    I never knew about the humidity factor! That could explain my static and noise issues, but I think dirty records is part of it also. I only have record cleaning spray and cloth, which really isn’t very effective. I also think that using solution to clean the stylus is a good idea? I imagine it getting a buildup of dirt over time which isn’t removed just by brushing. I hate to even use the brush though, knowing how precise the tips need to be. I guess they’re way too hard to be damaged by bristles though.

    I’ve had success with groove washer products. Brushes solutions etc. they also have a stylus cleaner w a solution that I use. My first thought was maybe your stylus is ready to be replaced?

    I keep a humidity gauge near my records and if its anywhere around 30% i turn on a humidifier to bring it up for 40-50%. Usually helps with static. But also i live in LA so it can get really dry here. I imagine any home does as well if you’re running a heater. If it’s windy outside, that also causes static build up.

    Plug in a humidfier about 10 minutes before you clean your records. Keep the room closed up.

    I had this problem when I turned my heat on. It was driving me crazy because it was happening on everything, new and recently cleaned (sonic and spin). I removed the felt slipmat so the acrylic was against the record, still happened and it was LOUD. I reconnected the ground, moved wires so they weren’t touching anything and still had the pops. I have several brushes and by process of elimination found this cheap one with small bristles that stopped the static. I was ready to order a static gun but this little brush that I never used did the trick. Carbon fiber

    Static from dry air in winter. Humidifier works, and there is the antistatic stuff for discwashers and the like
