I don’t play it much these days but it’s a very cool piece I’m glad I picked up when I did.

Please tell us why Technics sa-1000 ?

When I grew up in the 70-80s . Technics brand was not hi end . What makes the Tecnics Sa-1000 so desirable . Is it the looks or the performance ? Just would like todays perspective . McIntosh was the gold standard . Onkyo . Yamaha was a receiver that was affordable . Marantz pioneer fisher was a little better then entry level. Panasonic Sony was entry level

Was Technics one of the winners in the “Receiver Wars” of the 70’s & 80’s IIRC? Technics was the step up brand of Panasonic, and their receivers were very good in a period of some great brands like Yamaha; Marantz; and Pioneer. Technics held their own. That’s why their gear is desirable. Wish I had one when they came out. They were price comparable to Marantz and Yamaha.

marantz and Yamaha are not in the same class. Marantz and Pioneer are in the same class. Frills and lights but distortion more previlant in the cheaper brands.

That may be true, since Pioneers were the winner in the wattage. Marantz had the best look and style (and cost more) Technics receivers held their own with Yamaha; Sansui; and Kenwood. IIRC, all of those were around the same price. The only Pioneer I could afford was a Super Tuner cassette player for my car. Man, Pioneer made some great car audio around this time.

again. Pioneer was good looking but had a lot of distortion. Kenwood, Alpine was far more superior for the car. Yamaha and Kenwood was not in the same class . Kenwood was in the same class as JVC in 1988. Yamaha had a lot less distortion

I’ll just have to disagree with you on that one. You can put an early (between 79 and the mid 80’s Pioneer Super Tuner II cassette deck with a set of Jensen Co Axial or Tri Axial speakers and it would sound amazing. I would compare Alpine to Blaupunkt and Clarion for best car audio during those times. You are right that Kenwood spent more time making better car audio than their home audio

Clarion is as bad as Audiovox . If you actually had a ear for music you would have had a kenwood or alpine with Boston acoustics speakers or Polk audio . The low end you could hear the distortion especially as loud as I jammed .

technics not high-end ,maybe one of the most high-end brands in existance, there is nothing is other brands that technics doesn´t make it better ,the turntables are the best ,for a fact, fisher is far from getting to technics feet

Dont get me wrong I own a technics turntable. in 1988 when I purchased it , I could not afford something more expensive, I already purchased a Yamaha receiver , NAD cassette deck and Polk speakers. I would have purchased a Dual if I had more to spend. I just dont remember ever looking at Technics when it came to anything else.

no problem at all but if you want to know both brands you refer have in some years very good turntables but technics mostly in the 70´s were the best in turntables ,the one you bought in late 80´s at least i can tell you that this new projects and regas are all worst, this till around 1.000€ , if the technics you have is giving problems it´s only better to buy a second hand one from technics. Yamaha, they have good ones but they are rare and they might ask a lot of money ,Dual as good turntables the early 80´s ones were considered by many the best that was because all had ortofon cartridges ,even branded Dual but looking like the OM series which the old ones were very good today are just the cheapest they have, but not like those early 80´s ,thorens are very good but sometimes they ask a lot of money and some parts are missing and always expensive from this new wave the Fluance might be less expensive but for sure are better and you can always buy a better cartridge for it, with the money you buy a very bad pro-ject , technics even today they have a lot of good amplifiers and speakers ,in the 70´s they had everything good as any other brand some are even technics followers ,the dual they released in late 80´s or 90´s were very good but today they seem not good with the passage of time, NAD or new acoustic dimension i have a very good integrated amplifier from the 70´s also have a 1224 turntable from Dual as it´s amplifier , tuner and speakers(4ohms)it belonged to my grandmother it´s in mint condition and came with a shure cartridge, there are always good turntables in second hand, just have to look at their specifications and it helps if you ´re registred in hifiengine or vinylengine for free, they have catalogs from every brand very complete colections for one to compare now the old 2nd hand turntables with reviews and vinyl engine they talk about the turntables they use so it´s a detailed information about the most bought turntables and what are their weeknesses and which cartridges are the better ,a cheap one is the MP-110 , happy turntable improvement

my dad had a Dual . I used it for a race track for my Hot Wheels. He also had Fisher audio from 1962-1965 . I was too young to know any better.

my father was a very rich man till some days ago when he passed away with 92 years old for a colonoscopie badly done who killed him but when young i had not shoes that didn´t felt my fingers toutchin`the street or dirt way or any pice of cloth that i wouldn´t feel bad in school with 14 yerars old ,i never had a hot wheels race track or a scalectrix, but now i have a hi-fi component colection with all expensive brands i could know, and a 15.000 record colection ,mainly jazz,afro-beat and rock or hard rock records, i own 12 high-end turntables from early 60´s till late 90´s and 48 cassette decks ,imagine a good one ,i own it ,before i had a portable stereo philips radio cassette player from 1980, i didn´t had time to see everything he had packed with several sheets of plastic inside car-boxes, regards

The wire connections to the diodes get very brittle. So if you are in there doing anything (clean up, recap, pot deoxit) and bump a wire they will break. They are impossible to find and many “try this” options but nothing short of replacement diodes will bring confidence. If they don’t operate properly, the amp goes into a “runaway” mode and overheats to the point of destruction. (Sorry for thr long winded answer)

Thank you for replying I have restored many sa 500s and a couple of sa 600s. I never saw these diodes perhaps they are only in the upper wattage models but I will be careful yes I have seen those diodes in other older vintage amps though. Yeah that’s tough luck. Perhaps there is some sort of a workaround for this replacement diode

They are attached to the heat sinks (2 on the SA800. There are makeshift homemade options but even the best do not replicate the diode response of the original. Occasionally there is someone who pops up with “hey I have some” but in my case, the SA800 was sold “as is” to a parts house.

That is a wonderfully beastly specimen of raw vintage power and technology, not to mention the coolness of the black face. Hope it is well insured!
