I have been using ROON for several years and happy with it’s built in upsampling function.
Learnt that there is a software called “HQPlayer” and many commented that it do great job in upsampling. Anyone is using it with the ROON here?
I’ve been using HQPlayer for more than a year and I love it. I bought a NOS dac (Holo May) specifically because it works so well with HQPlayer. The ability to subtly sculpt the sound according to what it needs is amazing. Pop music gets upsampled PCM with a short filter for best transient response, orchestral/classical music gets a long filter with DSD for layering and space.
Software wise you might think the cost is steep but if you compare the sonic effects to what some people spend on cable “upgrades” it’s a bargain. Is there some specific reason that you require upsampling? It’s of no benefit in terms of fidelity.
People think cables make a difference. This is not a crazy thing imo
Analogue cables do make a difference.
Some comments the effects of upsampling by HQPLAYER is positive.
Someone did a performance analysis of it a few year ago, and here are his conclusions:
“3. From a sound quality perspective, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the “sinc” resamplers and DSD modulators I tested out. While I remain agnostic around which DSD/sigma-delta modulator is “best”, I accept that people can have subjective opinions on this since there are real differences in distortion and noise levels between the different settings. Perhaps certain settings could lead to more “euphonic” output depending on one’s gear. But I believe sonic differences would be at best subtle though based on my own listening and what the results tell me.”

Have you tried it? There’s a measurable reduction in in-band noise and out of band images (that can intermodulate back into the audio band as distortion).
Many will argue about the audibility of these effects but it’s a fact that upsampling using powerful hardware is measurabily superior to what your dac is doing internally.
