  • Yo there is something that is “the top of its class” within every genre… take Caravan Palace for instance… they had a new genre named after them.

Also remember that looser Skrillex that only makes weird old telephone noises and wub wubs well believe it or not that guy is actually one of the best sound designers in the world… he’s responsible for inventing all sorts of new shit, he still makes music too! He is legitimately on a quest for fire

There’s a whole lot of people that like to say “mixed really well” I mean no disrespect but what do you know about mixing?

  • Caravan palace - Parisian band that started as three collaborative music producers one being a singer. They all shared love of Django reinhardt and big band swing jazz and started by making music for a silent adult film. In my mind they are responsible for creating the genre they are associated with… “Electro Swing”… although every other attempt at the electric swing genre by other artists has fallen completely flat on its face in my ears…

The Album “Panic” is a newage Jazz masterpiece

The Presets- One of the biggest and most mesmerizing acts to come out of the Australian edm scene. If you apreciate sound design than…

the album “Hi-viz” is delightful in so many ways

Childish Gambino- The actor from the show community who single handedly created the award winning show Atlanta also became a Grammy award winning artist

The album “Redbone” is his magnum opus… a smooth mix of hip hop, and psychedelic jazz rock

Matt Mays - my hometown hero, a songwriting style akin to Sam Robert’s with a keen ear for using extremely experimental recording techniques.

The album “When the Angels Make Contact” - recorded in a world renowned studio, located inside a pharmacy building that stood tall after directly facing the Halifax explosion. The album is a mix of artists making music for a movie that lost funding and was scrapped… the artists all led by Matt Mays finished the music for the non existent movie anyway.

Yea I decided to put presonus eris 3.5s on top of my adam a7xs with eris sub… i run line outs from my apollo twin to the erisis and main LR to the Adam’s… this has been alot of fun seeing what kind of crazy good sounds I can get from my new wall of sound… so far it only seems like a good idea, everything is in phase and I’m having fun… does anyone have insight as to why that would be a bad idea?

  • I dont know where your getting sarcasm… try to picture a waveform that’s connected directly to the analog source; perfect example is a seismagraph as it is the same technology… that is a waveform connected directly to the source of the energy in this case the rumblings of the earth. There is enough mathematical data within those waveforms to develop the Fast Fourier Transfer algorithm which is responsible for basically all computational process that happen today.

Do you think if you replaced the smooth waveform data with jagged microscopic 90 degree angles ie (samples) the Fast Fourier transform would still work?

  • Your missing something in your understanding of dynamics i think… your focused on total spl dynamics but there is an inner dynamic that alot of people seem to get confused about. If you look at the masterbus of a mix you have one continuous waveform. That waveform holds the information for all the instruments in the track. And there is only so much spectral information that can come out of your speaker at one time. What you hear in analog seeing as analog is essentially infinite medium is instruments dancing within their own dynamic ranges as opposed to digital which grabs everything together as a whole and tells it when to go up and down.

The white noise you hear on lps is not “noise” in a traditional sense it’s “noise” that allows your cortex to fill in the gaps so to speak.

The analog to digital digital to analog conversion has spent its entire existence trying to replicate the sound of being analog and to many people such as myself there is still something missing.

The analog to digital conversion takes a waveform of infinite mathematical density and takes forty four thousand one hundred samples of voltage every second and depending on your bitrate, a certain amount of cpu memory is dedicated to the dynamic range between each of those individual samples of voltage. If your computer can’t think fast enough well thats distortion, if your in 192k and your file is 44.1 that’s distortion, if your computer needs an update that’s distortion, then you got compression algorithms, faulty wordclocks… half the time people don’t even realize that their digital files have been severely compromised because they can’t hear for shit anyway. Cds are 44.1 16bit and some of them sound fucking fantastic but vhynl still sounds better

  • You don’t have to have perfect hearing to learn how to listen humans can hear a maximum between 20hz and 20khz

That being said the frequency 8khz sounds like bacon sizzling by the time you get to 13kz it sorta starts to hurt or feel uncomfortable 15khz I just now had to point speaker in my phone at my head to hear it over the sound of my TV 17 i can just barely hear but it makes me wildly uncomfortable…

There’s just not alot of musical information up in those higher ranges… mostly “airyness”. Hi fi systems are so incredibly better than consumer grade stuff. You would have to have serious hearing damage to not be floored by nice monitors.

💰 money talks when it comes to hi fi gear… just make sure to try before you buy… I have adam ax7s at home and it one of the best investments I ever made… the successor to the adam ax7s have a built in reference mic that calculates your room dimensions and adjusts the speakers to automatically account for phase correlation, standing waves and first reflections. Great place to start… if you don’t have much cash the presonis eris 3.5s system is really great for close monitoring.

I would steer clear of rokits. Try before you buy !

  • Well by virtue of experience most people these days like music but are just naive to the gear. Most people will never hear or even understand the monumental difference between hi fi gear in a treated room and their living room speakers…

I mean do you want to really hear an album?.. or do you just think you do. Maybe you just want the idea of the thing but not the whole enchilada. I mean nice speakers good medium will literally sound like there is an actual full band in your living room.

That being said there is still much quality to be had with other consumer audio products that sing very nicely at any range of volume. your able to hear everything that the song has to offer… that the artist intendded yet!!! It does not sound like there is an actual band performing live in your living room

  • I constantly hear imagined artifacts (or real) in digital representations of material… I can’t hear the difference between 16 bit 44.1 and 24 192… but there is something that goes on with the initial transients, akin to there being some infinitely small sample wide clicking distortion at the peak of transients… also the instruments are much more likely to muddy eachother and compete for space in the frequency spectrum…

But when I listen to vhynl or tape my brain is able to relax and just take it in because in those mediums even the wrong answers are right most of the Time. The instruments are able to sit within their perspective ranges more obviously.

Now over the years fighting with all the different forms of digital distortion I have this constantly nagging feeling like something in the circuit is wrong… and that’s mostly just my own psyco somatic auditory process.

My brain is hardwired to pick up any digital distortion so much so that even a hint of it removes me from the enjoyment immediately and must be dealt with… but the causes of lossy digital distortion are so vast any many that listening sessions often turn into troubleshooting sessions… but the “warmth” of vhynl and tape are undeniable and require no additional mental gymnastics because I can remain in a state of awe over the technology itself…

They say that some infinities are bigger than others… idk about that but I do know within the walls of analog mediums there is a literal infinity. Digital is great in sooooo many ways but forever missing that little tinge of infinity
