not bad but you definitely need to pull the speakers out to the edge of the stand to avoid reflections off it muddying up your sound.

7-8ft is pretty good. im at 7ish. my room is 13x16. you will be even more pleased adding a couple of subs to go with your floorstanders. forget some lil bookshelves.
i would not go to bookshelves after having had floorstanders. jmo. i went to them because i like big ass speakers for the scale and heft of music they provide.
my goal is to enjoy the music i love played through the gear i own. the only way it can get better is for me to spend at least 5x what mine is worth just to hear some differences because they wont be large. they’ll be incremental.
using a phone as a streamer, ive always turned its volume to 100 and used my preamp for volume contol.
these days, i streamer from a wiim mini going optical into my preamp. its gain is set at 100.
i didnt seem to like the effects of using the phone or app as volume control. something like 80% gain, then trying to get max signal out from the preamp.
100% at the source doesn’t overdrive my amps.
i imagine that if your speakers go down to say 28hz, they roll off about ~35-38 just for example.
your sub crossover would be around ~40hz. this is about where the whatever bass was there, begin tailoring off in volume and energy.
even without dsp, you can hear the place if you make a few adjustments.
this is letting your mains shine and giving them some energy in the frequencies not being handled by the mains because they either rolled off or dont go as low.
as far as time alignment, i cant speak.
my subs are outboard of my mains with the baffles aligned as best i could by ear. sounds fine tome.
if youve got full range speakers, they oughtta be getting you mighty close to the thrill youre looking for. id imagine you might need a little more work on speaker placement. aaand a sub or two.
my jbl l890s spec to 26hz and it sounds like it. they hit low and solid. but adding the matching 12" sealed sub was an eye-opener. 2 of them are just wow. dude, they thud when i want em to. generally, theyre barely on and make a big difference. when i crank em up, they certainly slam.
iono about there being a lotta difference between sealed and ported. ive heard both and its preference for me. frankly, i love the sealed and i listen to music way, way more than movies. i certainly get slam with movies.
a preamp is 2ch only.
an avp is 5+ channel providing processing for surround sound. they typically can be used as a preamp using 2ch selection.
i use mine as a preamp only as its a very nice unit, sounds better than my other pre and avr, and i didnt want 5 amps(long story). i also have a 7.2 avr for home theater.

any jbl l52 and up. any jbl 4xxxx series.
i agree. my feelings as well.
do not put it ina corner.
do put a sub pad or something like it, under the sub.
make sure your set up is not against a shared wall.
turn the subs off at 8pm weekdays. 10 on the weekend. party once in awhile. not regularly.
from an apt dweller with big stuff.
