Hello headphone audiophile people! I want to get my hardworking husband a nice gift this Christmas and he has complained about his ATH-M50x starting to fall apart for quite some time. I have read a lot and it seems these are very very good but I am sure there are better out there.

He records music occasionally and uses them for that. The cord feature is still desirable because I think he will believe the sound is better and this is only for at home listening anyways. I think noise cancelling would be cool since we have a 2 year old but not a necessity. He mostly listens to music and games with them - loves classical, metal, and punk music. Comfort is also important for long days working on the computer.

I am happy to spend 200 euros ++ if it means a better experience for him. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

probably better to ask him, especially since he records music

frame it as helping you buy a present for you or a relative of yours

I love listening to metal as well and for me it’s also really hard finding a good headphone that can fulfill these criterias with a strong bass, good details in the midrange and a bit of treble but not so much that it gets peaky which leads to hissing sounds.

Audio Technica seems to be good for that. Majority of people in this subreddit don’t like them because they are not neutral and flat and not harman target curve based but I myself love my ATH-M30. They are really forward to your face, have power behind everything and the bass might be a bit too much for those people who prefer flat and neutral but for me it can’t be enough.

For 200€ you won’t find an acceptable replacement for the ATH-M50x.

Denon seems to be okay-ish but they also lack in the bass area in my opinion.

But it’s hard finding something as a gift for headphones because you have to personally listen to headphones in order to find out what you prefer. If you know what your husband likes then you could test some headphones but in the end your ears will differ as well so it’s always the best if he tests some by himself.

This submission has automatically been removed due to the following rule:

Rule 2: Ask purchase and shopping questions in the Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk

Requests for product opinions, comparisons, and general purchase advice must be made in the dedicated Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk instead of a new post.

Portable audio related purchase advice may also be asked in r/HeadphoneAdvice but please familiarize yourself with their rules first.

What questions are considered purchase advice?

    • A request for product suggestions, comparison requests, or opinion requests fall under the purchase advice rule. These can often be found by searching first.

    • Any suggestion or comparison request pertaining to headphones, IEMs, DACs, amps, or other accessories should be directed to the purchase help thread or r/headphoneadvice.

    • Asking the subreddit to help make a decision to buy a product does fall under this rule (e.g. “should I get dekoni pads for my HD650?”).

Why does this rule even exist?
