Hi guys,

I have an embarrassingly basic question because I’m new to home audio—

I bought my best friend a decware se34l.3 (used, level 1 anniversary mod) and a pair of used Jbl l100 classics (orange covers ;)). I’m planning to make some cables (I’ve made a lot of other kinds of cables in the past), but I was wondering what else he would need to play a record and to play from phone/computer (not wireless) Is that what people call a “phono stage?”

I’m sure he has one, but I’m just wondering what else would be needed, I want to make sure he can set up and rip when he opens for Christmas. Thanks! Super excited!

    To connect a turntable to the decware, a phono preamp is required. If your friend has one I recommend using his. Cables between the turntable, phono preamp and decware are typically RCA cables.

    To connect a computer to the decware, you could use a cable that has a 3.5mm headphone jack (connects to computer) on one end and RCA jacks on the other (connects to decware). However, most people would choose to connect the computer to an external DAC using a USB cable and connect the DAC to the decware with an RCA cable. External DACs are typically much better than the computer’s internal DAC. And, an amp/speaker pair like your gift deserves the better quality.

    To connect the decware to speakers, just ordinary speaker wire is fine.

    If you want to buy him a phono preamp and DAC I’d recommend the Schiit Audio Mani and Modi+. Both are great quality and great value.

    The decware se34l.3 only has 6 watts per channel. The minimum recommended is 25 watts for your speakers. You’ll need to be very careful with the how much volume the speakers are. Never let anybody touch the volume knob that doesn’t understand the limitations.

    Maybe someone here that knows about using high current, low watt amplifiers can post some tips.
