I have a rather nice SAEC XC10 cartridge fitted to my Victor QL A95, I am currently hooked up to a vintage Pioneer A8 amp and have noticed that when I switch between the mono and stereo setting I lose sound from one channel. The thing is, when it’s set to mono I get both channels and only one when on stereo. I attached a VM95SH, changed the pre amp to mm and get both channels when set to stereo. So do I have a very nice MC cart with a fault? (It sounds great when on mono though!)

Does the single channel change when you switch the connectors from the TT to the amp? Meaning, if it only outputs to the left, even after switching the connectors, it’s an issue with the amp.

And, it could be a fault with just the MC section of the pre-amp. Try running the MC cartridge on the MM pre-amp (volume would be very low) and see whether you get both channels.

Main take away is: when debugging, try to isolate each component and test just that. No point in changing multiple things at the same time, because then you still have to guess where the issue is.
