Just got a new (well, actually a refurb unit from Accessories4less) Denon PMA-17000ne and almost immediately notice clipping in left channel even at relatively low volumes ( not present when it is really low). Did basic troubleshooting - changed cables, etc.
Previously used an older surround Sony ES receiver repurposed as my “music amp” without problems but wanted to have something with a dedicated phono input.
Just wondering - is it an issue of this being a defective unit or is this Denon just not capable of handling Forte IIIs?
I like it otherwise so if it is defective I’ll try my luck with another unit, but obviously if it is not powerful enough then I should not waste my time.
99 dB efficient speakers and a 140w amp, that should be causing permanent hearing loss before it clips. Definitely a faulty unit or a stray wire somewhere.
Send back the amp, but first swap the speaker wire to see if the clipping moves to the other speaker
Not clipping under normal circumstances, as others have said you are likely using less than 2 watts of power even at high volumes. I’d sent the amp in if it’s under warranty. After checking another amp to make sure it isn’t the speakers.
Swap wires left to right right to left. If problem stays the same swap speakers left to right right to left. If problem stays the same bad amp. If problem moves then problem is what ever was just swapped.
Thanks to all who replied.
The problem is when streaming from a streamer box which has coax, optical out and line out through onboard dac, problem present with all 3 outputs and persists in left output channel even when switching channels, no such problem with old amp
Bizarre thing- it is prominent mostly when listening to low frequency deep vocals.
Have you switched the input channels from the streamer? If the problem moves to the other channel, it is a streamer problem. Otherwise, it has to be the amp.
Your amp probably has an issue that was missed when inspected. This is not uncommon with Accessories4less. I have had to send back a few items from them that didn’t work properly after I received them. Many people have no issues but I’ve had multiple. Customer service is spotty so hopefully they pay for the return shipping. I stopped shopping from them unless it’s speakers.
