I was just curious as a newcomer to this hobby what your “Mt Rushmore” of headphones would be and why? Maybe one ubiquitous, one iconic, one studio headphone, and one high end / audiophile pick? If that’s too broad you could just focus on whichever category is most relevant to you. Let me know if this discussion already exists on this sub or elsewhere!

Whoops, maybe there is something more universally understood I could compare to. I also posted it late so I bet mostly non-Americans are seeing it 🤦🏻‍♂️

I stole a pair of Grados from a native american pal and then desecrated them with a bunch of my own shitty modifications designed to glorify myself, so I’d say those are my Mount Rushmore headphones

the dt1990s are a solid pick for high end / audiophile category, and for studio headphones, the beyerdynamic dt770s are a classic choice!

I really need to try the Sennheisers out locally. My main pair and point of reference is Hifiman Edition XS which aren’t really comparable (planar).

Are you aware of any amazing sets that include a microphone? I’m interested in a high-quality set… but would appreciate microphone functionality

Honestly your best bet is going for a well regarded standalone headphone and combine it with something like the Antlion Modmic. Add some cable ties (preferably the twisty ones, or velcro) so you’re only dealing with one wire effectively and you get the headset form factor with the flexibility of two separate devices.

We’ll try to get one iconic rep from different genres:

    Denon AH-9200

    Sennheiser HD600

    Hifiman HE1000 V2

    Koss Porta Pros

Don’t even try me on the Porta Pros. If you’re still relevant after 40 years, you belong on the mountain.

I was thinking of the Porta Pros in making this post. I was thinking of other defining designs like the Fender Stratocaster, Shure SM58 microphone, Volkswagen Beetle etc and wanted to know what the headphone equivalents would be. I’m too young to have been around during the Porta Pro’s heyday but I imagine they were similarly popular to AirPods today. I want a pair!
