In all seriousness, though, I am searching for an upgrade from my DT 990s (290 grams) and have heard fantastic things about the LCD-2 classic line. However, I have also heard horror stories and discourse amongst the forums from people who are not big fans of the weight.

What are some of your experiences with Audeze headphones, specifically regarding the weight? Does the adjustability and comfort make it less significant an issue than some people describe?

I also encourage those with 500+ gram headphones to say their thoughts.

I’ll chime in since I’ve owned the LCD2 and currently own an LCD4 (730 grams) which is one of the heaviest headphones available. When I initially got the LCD2 the weight was also a concern but you eventually get used to it.

The suspension strap and earpads for Audeze are very comfortable. It fits very snug and you can tweak the clamping force by tightening or loosening the screws under the yokes. The weight concern is really one of those things where you won’t know how much it will bother you til you actually try. I’d give it several weeks of long listening sessions before making a final judgment call.

The main thing that Audeze owners complain about is the strap stretching/loosening over time and eventually touching the steel/carbon fiber. This creates a hotspot on your head making it uncomfortable. There’s ways around this by either using a Zmf pilot pad, shortening the strap yourself with some handy work or getting a new strap. In my case I shortened the leather strap on my 4s and its been great.

Ultimately, Audeze makes amazing planars that are definitely worth a try. I’d recommend buying used in excellent condition, and if by chance the weight is a major issue for you, sell it without taking too much of a loss.

Thank you for this wonderful advice and for talking about how adjustable the cans are; I will definitely look for a good deal

What made the LCD-4 comfortable for me was combining a ZMF Copilot Pad with a Lohb Strap. It’s similar to ZMF headphones, I suppose, in that the Copilot Pad is cradling the suspension strap on the sides of the head so there isn’t a hot spot on the top.
