I want to compare those albums with their digital counterparts.

The vast bulk of all hip-hop is going to have some digital step in the process given the genre pretty much came after the move to digital.

That said, there could be a few albums out there done 100% live with a backing band recorded to analog? Maybe the Roots did one?

But also remember, the whole ‘recorded digital vs. analog’ really means nothing anyways.

I was thinking Roots as well but not sure where to start. Why do you say record on analog vs digital doesn’t matter?

Maybe the Roots? I don’t know how they recorded but at least they are a band and didn’t rely solely on samples, synths and drum machines.

Not really hip-hop, but almost everything by Aesop Rock tickles my fancy! But I will always have my audiophile Muddy Waters and Stacey Kent albums on tap.

Do you understand the history and pillars of hiphop? Even rappers delight was samples from Chic and stuff, I don’t even know what you’re looking for.

Most records, even rock and jazz etc, were being mixed and recorded digitally by the time hiphop was being invented.

Was Rapper’s Delight entirely analog? It doesn’t really get earlier than that, but it’s also just late enough they could have been doing some digital stuff in the studio.
