Just moved into a new place and am struggling with speaker placement.

For background, our old house was bigger so I had the space for two setups - a pair of Wharfedale Lintons in the living room and Zu Audio DW mkIIs in the basement.

In the new place, I can only keep one pair of speakers which will need to go into the living room. However, as you can see from the photo, we have a custom tv bench that extends the entire length of the wall which makes placing floor standers or massive bookshelves like the Lintons challenging.

I’ve suggested to the wife that we can place the speakers in front at either end, but that did not go down so well haha.

Anyone have any recommendations? Or do I have to give up both pairs and get some smaller bookshelf speakers? I’m very unfamiliar with bookshelves as I’ve always preferred the aesthetic of floor standers

I run a Decware Zen Triode amp, so I’m limited to speakers with 90db sensitivity and above.

Beautiful space. It sounds like floor standers won’t really work well with your constraints, but there are lots of nice bookshelf options. Since your decor is while, I’d go w/white genelec 8361a’s. You know, for the wife’s sake.

Thanks! Those Genelecs do look a bit too “studio monitor” for my tastes. Also sensitivity is not high enough to pair with my amp which needs something 89db and over to sound right.

They’re powered - no amp needed. The looks can be a bit off-putting, admittedly.

I always find it interesting how polarizing Genelec’s visual design language can be. For me, they’re some of the most visually pleasing speakers on the planet–but then I am also immersed in modern and contemporary design/art history (in personal and professional contexts), so I see them alongside many other examples of innovative speaker design–Bang and Olufsen’s many designs over decades, B&W “Nautilus,” Radialstrahler speakers…literally anything other than a box.

Stands are out, unfortunately. They’re a big no-no from the interior designer wife. And, tbh, I’m struggling to find some decently-priced bookshelves that have a high enough sensitivity to match with my amp

It was actually my wife who suggested “what about something nice from Bang and Olufsen?” To which the audiophile part of my lizard brain recoiled haha

I will admit, though, they do make some nice looking kit. I just don’t think I could bring myself to switch to active speakers after having experienced the pairing of high sensitivity Zus with the 2.5watts for my Decware amp…

B&O is literally one of the world’s leading names in audio engineering and has been for decades…

They just also take visual design into consideration, unlike the vast majority of speaker manufacturers.

That makes me think about the KEF T series speakers. They make for a nice clean install and sound pretty good. Otherwise, rip out those built ins and go nuts.

Yep, two really nice bookshelf speakers or towers. Subs too, if you’re spicy.

Ja, I have a Lyngdorf TDAI 1120 to run Room Perfect, so I’m less worried about the room. But unfortunately speakers in front of the windows is a no-go, what you don’t see from the is that the windows extend another 3 meters to the right along the whole wall, so it’s just not feasible sadly

    Beautiful place.

    Maybe wall loudspeakers will do?

Something like the Dali Rubicon LCR.

I don’t know how it sounds though.

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve been looking at wall speakers but coming from exclusively big boxy floor standers I find it very hard to believe that a flat tiny speaker is going to be able to meet expectations haha

Throw the TV in a dumpster, rotate the couch 90° and get a pair of full range towers… Focal Aria 948 with a quality sub, but a pair of Paradigm Founder 120H with a decent sub and class A integrated would be amazeballs!
