Still sounds as good as it did when it was new. I have it hooked up to a a pair of EV ELIMINATOR speakers and it will shake the house. Very loud and very clear sound.
The shadow from the wadded-up cord almost looks like some of the magic smoke is escaping.
Beauty!
I had one, super clean sound, but lax’s bottom end punch.
Gotta use the variable loudness control to tune it in. Takes a bit of find tuning but is supposed to be adjusted depending on your listening level to fill the sound in just right. It’s odd for sure.
Not with my Ohm L’s.
Compared to the same class of receivers, in its price range. Examples Pioneer sx1050/ sx 1080/ Sanusi 8080/ or Kenwood Kr-9600. The Yamaha has smaller capacitors. But at mid-level listening way cleaner than the others. I was listening to Klipsch Chores 2 at the time. Very loud and bass heavy speakers.
As a long time Yamaha vintage and modern audio fan, specifically the Yamaha CR-2040, this is a great receiver! You even have the Yamaha Orthodynamic rectangle cover on the headphone jacks. You have a high quality piece that gives out a great sound and it’s quite a looker too. Just keep up the maintenance on it and it will last you for many years to come.
Oh by the way, here’s an example of what your receiver is going for nowadays on Ebay restored:

Cheers!
Here’s a CA-2010, that appears to be a deep ocean reef wreck recovery, for sale on shopgoodwill.com that has a ‘parts’ label on it.
People are paying insane money for these things.
OP has treasure.
Wow I had never checked the price of them as I will never part with it.
This is so wholesome. You’ve found what you love and kept it pristine. I bet those EV eliminators sound awesome.
Nice quality stuff…they were pricey “back in the day”
A nice looker 🙂
This is an absolute beauty. I have a CA-1010 that I love.
That is beautiful! I’m listening to my CR-800 right now and love the way it sounds. Not sure what I would do with all that extra power!
I love the old Yamaha’s. I love the look and they sound great. I especially love the variable loudness on the Yamaha’s. I wish every receiver had something similar. I have a CR-1020 right now but I’m about to give it back to my ex-girlfriend (long story). I’d like to have another one so I’m keeping my eye out for a 2020. I would see them pop up on Facebook Marketplace for a good price every now and then but of course now that I’m looking for one that’s not the case.
Keep an eye out for the CR 2040 as well, they can usually be had for cheaper than a 2020 and sound just as good if not better. Different aesthetic, but not bad.
I had an 820 for decades. These are beautiful, sophisticated beasts. Congrats.
What sources do you use? Ever thought about finding a matching turntable?
That little electrical hum when you turn it on
Yes! I had cheap lawn furniture inside my first 1980 apt but the Yamaha and some custom towers made it the party venue
Very nice! Does it have a few lights out?
Yamahas only have a lamp on the dial indicator, so this is all good.
Good to know! Thank you! I have never actually seen a silver face up close in person.
Silver face to face you mean?
Silver faced yamaha receiver.
Don’t we all?
Okie dokie.
