Sorry for the long post, looking to get some pros and cons on a future, multi purpose setup.

I have a Yamaha CA1010 for my vinyl listening. Something I’ll never part with and want to always utilize in a stereo setup(Dad bought it brand new and took immaculate care of it for 40 years). I will be finishing my basement soon and putting in kind of a family room/theater-esque setup with 7.1 system.

I want to utilize the Yamaha for vinyl and a new AVR for the home theater. Both utilizing the same front two speakers.

Two options:

  1. Get a speaker switch that I can go between receivers depending on what I’m listening to. Each receiver plugs into this switch and it has one speaker output to my two front speakers. Definitely the most straight forward approach, just have to physically switch to the receiver I’m going to use and then the power on to that receiver. It also introduces another piece of equipment into the equation.

  2. Plug TT into the new AVR. Plug RCA cables in from the L/R preouts of the AVR into the AUX of the Yamaha. My understanding is that this essentially will utilize the Yamaha as an amp only for the front two speakers. The Yamaha will always power those two speakers. When listening to my record player in the phono setting on the AVR, both the AVR and Yamaha would have to be on. The Yamaha will be providing the power, but the AVR would be the “brains” and I could control the volume with the AVR remote. Then when I want to watch a movie with the 7.1, again both units would have to be on, just the input would change on the AVR. The Yamaha would still be powering the 2 front speakers and the AVR would be powering the other 5.

There are pros and cons to either way that I can think of, but curious to see if anyone has input on the two different approaches. Is there something I’m not thinking of or aware of(I’m sure there is).
