I recall listening to the 105.2 when they were the actual model and even thought then for some material they sounded a bit sharp at moments (unfortunately, do not remember the amp behind) - so not polite definitely. This experience may had pushed me then more towards the 104.2 If I ‘m not mistaken, KEF used to sell the optional KUBE then for further adjustments that may had helped improve a bit the low end behaviour (B&W had offered something similar with Matrix 800 series beginning of ‘90s).

I also feel the 105.2s can be a bit sharp depending on the material and source gear - I had a McIntosh before that was too polite and my current Levinsons feel a better match. Some of the better cartridges I have (eg audio technica) can also be a little searing with them.

The KUBE never came with these, only the 104s 105s and 107s. Interesting you thought the 104s were more palatable, they were generally regarded to be more forward and energetic and less of KEFs more signature laid back smooth sound they were known for at the time
